2010

2010 is a year of change for Team 1646. Due to a loss of Mentors and Public Relations, some aspects of the team that were strong in years past, have become somewhat stagnant. So in response Precision Guessworks has decided to redefine it's priorities. (PG)Red, the program in which Team 1646 raised money to help entrepreneurs in Africa, is still strong and being revised to better accomodate the consumers and beginning businessmen and women. However, the experience doesn't stop there. To encourage the entreprenual spirit locally, team members are selling candy to promote FIRST Robotics and help fund events. In doing so members are learning different styles of marketing techniques, public speaking, and professionalism.

This year Team 1646 tried a new technique for the robot frame which involved the bending of metal. This technique made the frame lighter but also just as strong as it was with other methods. Making the frame in this way allowed 1646 to create a lighter, more efficient robot. Team 1646 was also able to win the Cagematch competition using the old robot during the start of the season. This win helped the morale of 1646 early in the season. Although Precision Guessworks never won an award in the Boilermaker or Buckeye competitions, they still had a solids season throughout.

2009

In 2009, Team 1646 is expanded on the previous year's theme, “Seeing Red Again.” Taking our inspiration from Bono’s Project (RED), we started a campaign to fight AIDS in Africa. Going from an unconventional viewpoint, (PG)Red did not raise money for AIDS research. Instead, our team sold t-shirts to raise money that was lent to entrepreneurs in Africa.  Our goal was to fight poverty in Africa, to increase availability to modern medicine there.

We also sponsored food, clothing, and blood drives, as well as assisting with the building of a house for Habitat for Humanity.

Our first regional was the Buckeye Regional in late February. We were excited to attend a week 1 regional and we feel we had a very strong performance, We were able to easily see flaws in our design as well as many strengths. We constructed new strategies that we could not consider without watching matches. With our new knowledge, we placed first after day one, with a perfect 6-0 record. Saturday was a bit more humbling as we fell to 10th place, but we were drafted first round to be part of the third alliance. We did not perform as well as we would have hoped, but we still enjoyed the experience.

2008

Scorpinok

Compared to our record numbers in 2007, 2008 was a sad year. Going from nearly 30 members to six was a difficult pill to swallow, but an influx of mentors from Purdue University revitalized our program and we were able to pull off a fairly successful season. We were selected for finals at both of the regionals we attended, but a few serious hits to our frame made it all but impossible to drive as fast as we previously had. By the end of the season, our lap average went from eleven per match to about six.

With the loss of McCutcheon, our team changed our colors from black and gold, back to black and red. We also tried to implement a Lego drive to collect toys for disadvantaged children and sold hex bugs to excite an interest in robotics among young kids.
    Team Awards won:
'Best Racer' , Boilermaker Regional from Team 1501 (Thrust)
'Ram Tough' , Great Lakes from Team 494 (Martians)
'Rapid Road Runner' , Great Lakes, from Team 1718 (The Fighting Pi)

2007

Trogdor

2007 was a climactic year for our outreach programs. In that third year, we doubled our numbers by taking in a fledgling team from local McCutcheon High School, although they are no longer with us, we are still working with many of them to get a team officially started at McCutcheon. As if one extra high school wasn’t enough, Team 1646 also offered a hand in fellowship to our two-year old sister team, Team 1747 Harrison Boiler Robotics. Their school would not allow them to use any equipment, so we opened our doors, and our ample amount of space, to help them finish the season.

Aside from our assistance to local high schools, during 2007 we held a science fair to open the minds of elementary school children to the wonders of science, engineering, and math. We also continued with our VEX program, although it never really reached FTC level.

Team Awards won:
'Imagery' award from Team 217 (Thunder Chickens)
'Lifesaver' award from Team 1747 (HBR)

2006

2006 was a year for change. In our second year, Team members voted and our name changed officially from Lafayette Jeff Robotics to Boiler Precision Guessworks. Alongside the name change, our team grew from small rookie to large veteran. Another change occurred in our community relations policy. We started a freshman VEX team and held a “Fun Run” to raise money and awareness for our team.

In 2006 we did quite well at the Buckeye Regional, earning a place in semifinals. Unfortunately one of our alliance partners bit the dust in the second match. Our bad luck continued at Boilermaker, but we turned it around at nationals and got picked for a final alliance.

2005

Lafayette Jeff Robotics started in 2005 as an offshoot of 461 Boiler Invasion. An assistant principle from Jefferson High School saw the merit of a program as amazing as FIRST and took a risk. Because of the support of Mr. Francis, our team has had the unique advantage of attendance immunity during competitions since our inception.

With only four weeks left in build season, Jeff Robotics began designing one of the best robots to ever come out of our shops. During that year, Team 1646 was the highest seeded rookie at the Midwest Regional and earned the Rookie All Star Award at the Boilermaker Regional.
